Dans le cadre de la visite culturelle et patrimoniale organis\u00e9e r\u00e9cemment par l\u2019Observatoire pour la protection de l\u2019environnement et des monuments historiques de Tanger<\/strong>, sous la conduite de M. Younes Cheikh Ali<\/strong>, les participants ont \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement interpell\u00e9s par une demeure situ\u00e9e dans le quartier de Beni Ider<\/strong>, au c\u0153ur de la m\u00e9dina historique, datant du XIX\u1d49 si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n

Cette maison rev\u00eat une importance historique et litt\u00e9raire exceptionnelle. C\u2019est en effet dans cette demeure que s\u00e9journa Alexandre Dumas p\u00e8re<\/strong> lors de son passage \u00e0 Tanger en 1846. Cette courte r\u00e9sidence inspira au c\u00e9l\u00e8bre \u00e9crivain un r\u00e9cit d\u2019une centaine de pages consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la ville. Plus de cent soixante ans apr\u00e8s sa premi\u00e8re publication, cet ouvrage fut r\u00e9\u00e9dit\u00e9 par les \u00e9ditions Afrique-Orient<\/strong> sous le titre Escale \u00e0 Tanger \u2013 1846<\/em>. Dumas y exprime toute son admiration pour la ville du D\u00e9troit et ses habitants, offrant une fresque vivante, riche en d\u00e9tails et profond\u00e9ment impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e de l\u2019esprit des lieux.<\/p>\n

Le plus surprenant est que la grande majorit\u00e9 des Tang\u00e9rois ignore encore aujourd\u2019hui l\u2019existence de cette maison. Pourtant, Alexandre Dumas compte parmi les \u00e9crivains les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres de la litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise et universelle. Ses \u0153uvres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 traduites dans des dizaines de langues et adapt\u00e9es au cin\u00e9ma, \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision et au th\u00e9\u00e2tre dans le monde entier.<\/p>\n

Dans cette ville embl\u00e9matique de l\u2019ancien Empire ch\u00e9rifien, ville d\u2019Hercule et d\u2019Ant\u00e9e, de Catherine de Portugal et d\u2019Ibn Batt\u00fbta, Dumas, anim\u00e9 par une curiosit\u00e9 insatiable, a su dresser un portrait vivant et nuanc\u00e9 de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 marocaine sous le r\u00e8gne du sultan Abderrahmane Ben Hicham<\/strong> (1822-1859). Il d\u00e9crit les habitants, leurs coutumes, leurs f\u00eates, leurs activit\u00e9s, les consuls \u00e9trangers, la chasse terrestre et maritime ainsi que les paysages du ciel et de la mer. Malgr\u00e9 certains pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s caract\u00e9ristiques de son \u00e9poque, son regard demeure empreint d\u2019une remarquable ouverture et d\u2019un profond int\u00e9r\u00eat pour le Maroc. Rares sont les liens qui se sont tiss\u00e9s avec autant de rapidit\u00e9 et d\u2019intensit\u00e9 entre un \u00e9crivain de cette renomm\u00e9e et une ville portuaire.<\/p>\n

Les visiteurs ont cependant \u00e9t\u00e9 profond\u00e9ment choqu\u00e9s par la mani\u00e8re dont cette demeure, autrefois menac\u00e9e d\u2019effondrement, est aujourd\u2019hui restaur\u00e9e. Il ne s\u2019agit plus d\u2019une restauration au sens patrimonial du terme, mais d\u2019une intervention qui d\u00e9nature l\u2019identit\u00e9 architecturale de la m\u00e9dina et efface progressivement une m\u00e9moire historique et urbaine qui constitue pourtant une singularit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle nationale.<\/p>\n

Les photographies prises pendant les travaux r\u00e9v\u00e8lent une m\u00e9connaissance manifeste de l\u2019histoire de Tanger et des sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9s de son architecture traditionnelle. Une nouvelle porte a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e avec un d\u00e9cor totalement \u00e9tranger \u00e0 l\u2019arc en plein cintre d\u2019origine qui la surmonte. De m\u00eame, la fen\u00eatre nouvellement install\u00e9e est en totale rupture avec l\u2019harmonie de la fa\u00e7ade et avec le vocabulaire d\u00e9coratif de cet ensemble architectural repr\u00e9sentatif du XIX\u1d49 si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n

Une question fondamentale se pose d\u00e8s lors : cette intervention est-elle r\u00e9alis\u00e9e dans le cadre du programme officiel de restauration et de r\u00e9habilitation de la m\u00e9dina de Tanger, sous la supervision d\u2019un architecte sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans la conservation du patrimoine ? Ou bien les travaux sont-ils confi\u00e9s \u00e0 une entreprise traditionnelle d\u00e9pourvue des comp\u00e9tences requises en mati\u00e8re de restauration des monuments historiques ?<\/p>\n

Cette interrogation est d\u2019autant plus l\u00e9gitime que l\u2019Observatoire pour la protection de l\u2019environnement et des monuments historiques de Tanger poursuit un important travail de mobilisation, de sensibilisation et de plaidoyer aupr\u00e8s des institutions nationales et internationales, notamment aupr\u00e8s du Bureau r\u00e9gional de l\u2019UNESCO, afin de soutenir l\u2019inscription de Tanger sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial.<\/p>\n

Dans de nombreuses villes europ\u00e9ennes, les b\u00e2timents ayant accueilli des \u00e9crivains, des artistes ou des penseurs sont signal\u00e9s par des plaques comm\u00e9moratives qui rappellent leur valeur historique et culturelle. Ce patrimoine contribue au rayonnement international de ces villes et \u00e0 la transmission de leur m\u00e9moire collective. La maison o\u00f9 s\u00e9journa Alexandre Dumas m\u00e9rite une reconnaissance et une mise en valeur comparables.<\/p>\n

Nous lan\u00e7ons donc un appel solennel aux autorit\u00e9s comp\u00e9tentes, aux responsables du patrimoine et aux d\u00e9cideurs afin qu\u2019ils interviennent sans d\u00e9lai pour sauver cette demeure embl\u00e9matique et veiller \u00e0 ce que sa restauration soit r\u00e9alis\u00e9e dans le respect de son \u00e9tat d\u2019origine, de son authenticit\u00e9 architecturale et des principes internationaux de conservation du patrimoine. Sauvegarder cette maison, c\u2019est pr\u00e9server une partie essentielle de la m\u00e9moire de Tanger et renforcer la cr\u00e9dibilit\u00e9 de sa candidature au patrimoine mondial de l\u2019UNESCO.<\/p>\n
